The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has announced his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election with "immediate effect".

He was poised to be a candidate among three standing for the role of Irish president, alongside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

However, on Sunday evening he stated via a statement that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I've chosen to withdraw from the election for president with immediate effect and reunite with my loved ones," he stated in a statement.
