The Liverpool legend in the running for Glasgow Rangers reappointment after Martin is dismissed.
Steven Gerrard is being strongly considered for a shock return to Ibrox following the official dismissal of manager the ex-Swansea boss.
The manager's unfortunate spell at Rangers ends
His unsuccessful period in Glasgow concluded with the boss departing the the away venue via a back exit and a pre-arranged transport after a level finish which left the Glasgow side eleven points adrift from the summit of the premier division after just seven matches.
Incensed supporters had gathered around the squad transport in the away ground, showing their discontent.
Club hierarchy hesitant to dismiss the manager
The club directors had been reluctant to let go of the former Swansea boss, who was only hired in the summer, despite vociferous complaints from the fanbase.
However, there was an acknowledgement that the 39-year-old’s job had become untenable.
The club have won only one of their league fixtures to date, which has been alongside dismal displays in European competition.
Overall, the manager managed only five wins of 17 official games, with a passive, muddled brand of football that earned him few friends.
“Although rebuilding phases take a while, results have failed to reach the organization's goals,” stated a club announcement on the weekend.
“Assistant head coach Matt Gill, and first-team staff member Mike Williamson, will also be moving on. Martin and his backroom team have worked exceptionally hard throughout their spell. We are grateful for their efforts and send best wishes for the time ahead.”
The former manager claimed the league with the team
Gerrard secured the championship with the Ibrox side in the 2020-21 season, their sole title since 2011.
His achievements in the Scottish league before then, coupled with struggles at Aston Villa, brings doubts about his coaching abilities.
Yet he is highly regarded by the very set of fans the team are keen to get back on side.
The return of the former Reds star, who most recently coached in the Saudi league, would be widely welcomed.
Gerrard will also be conscious of what limited opportunities he has to be a gaffer in significant leagues.
The departure will intensify scrutiny on the sporting director
The coaching change will heighten focus on Thelwell, the Ibrox director.
He had been hugely supportive of the manager while publicly revealing a net spend of twenty million pounds in the summer window.
The former boss had agreed to a three-year contract.
The coach's earlier positions
The manager, who had formerly managed the Dons and the Welsh club, managed the south coast club to elevation to the Premier League in the previous season after being hired the prior offseason.
He was dismissed last the end of the year after the Southampton won only one of their opening 16 fixtures.
He was named the former captain's next in line in the summer, after the interim head coach had succeeded the dismissed the former manager in February.
